Deutsche Bahn (DB) has begun recruiting Indian train drivers to tackle a growing shortage of qualified staff. Facing a significant shortfall in railway operators, Germany has turned to India, a country known for its extensive railway network and abundance of skilled professionals in the field. The recruitment effort targets highly qualified and trained drivers capable of operating in diverse environments and adapting to the technological and regulatory standards of Europe and DB's other operational regions. The selected drivers will receive specialized training on Deutsche Bahn's operational protocols and safety standards to ensure seamless integration into the company's workforce.
The employment of Indian train drivers is intended to support DB's ongoing projects, including passenger and freight services in various countries. The recruitment effort in India is further facilitated by DB's existing projects in the country, such as the management of the Regional Rapid Transit System in the Delhi region. For these projects, DB recruits local Indian staff. For example, Indian employees of DB International Operations are trained and employed as train drivers and station staff. In July 2022, DB IO secured a twelve-year contract for the operation and maintenance of the Regional Rapid Transit System. Since then, the German company has been training drivers and station personnel, organizing workshops, and planning schedules.
