The Directorate of Land Armaments has formalised an agreement with Iveco Defence Vehicles (IDV) to supply 1,423 industrial vehicles with all-wheel-drive capability, designed for tactical and logistical functions. At the heart of the contract lies IDV’s SMR6 (Standard Military Range) line, a versatile platform featuring 4x4, 8x8, and 10x10 all-wheel-drive variants. These vehicles will be delivered in a range of configurations, including troop and cargo transport, water and fuel tankers, recovery vehicles, container carriers, and towing systems. Deliveries to the Italian Army are set to commence in 2025 and continue through to 2038.
Iveco Defence Vehicles highlights that the SMR6 vehicles offer not only superior manoeuvrability and reliability but also significant logistical uniformity across platforms. This feature is critical for reducing operational costs and simplifying field maintenance—an essential advantage in complex military environments.
The SMR6 range, an acronym for Standard Military Range, includes vehicles in 4x4, 8x8, and 10x10 configurations, developed to deliver top-tier mobility, protection, manoeuvrability, and reliability. These vehicles are highly adaptable and modular, meeting a variety of operational needs. Configurations can accommodate troop and material transport, containers, and essential supplies like water and fuel. The range also includes specialised recovery vehicles equipped with winches, cranes, and platforms, as well as systems for towing heavy trailers.
The SMR6 vehicles stand out for their exceptional mobility, designed to perform in any terrain and environmental condition. They provide high-level protection, drawing on IDV’s extensive expertise in developing armoured platforms. The integration of proven components from Iveco’s commercial range, such as Eurocargo engines, ensures reliability and reduced maintenance costs. These vehicles also exhibit excellent manoeuvrability, even in confined spaces, and robust construction that supports complex logistical missions and combat support operations.
