On 8 January 2025, UPS announced the acquisition of Frigo-Trans and its subsidiary BPL, two European companies operating in healthcare logistics. This strategic move highlights UPS Healthcare’s commitment to consolidating its position as a key player in the global healthcare logistics sector, addressing the growing demand for solutions that combine temperature control with critical delivery timelines. With this acquisition, the US-based multinational bolsters its European network, integrating logistics solutions that span a broad range of needs, from cryopreservation at -196°C to ambient-temperature transport between +15°C and +25°C.
Frigo-Trans, headquartered in Fußgönheim, Germany, specialises in warehousing and transport services for pharmaceutical and biotech clients. Its European network provides cold-chain transport services supported by high-quality infrastructure, which also includes packaging and inventory management. The integration of BPL, based in Düsseldorf, brings additional expertise in transporting critical, temperature-sensitive products, ensuring efficient cross-border shipment management through a network of air and sea carriers.
The acquisition of Frigo-Trans and BPL is a key milestone in UPS’s development of what could be described as a healthcare logistics empire. Faced with stagnating revenue in parcel deliveries, the company is shifting its focus to specialised logistics services, which offer particularly attractive profit margins. Clients requiring refrigerated shipments of injectable medicines are willing to pay a premium for such services. By the end of 2023, UPS Healthcare had generated $10 billion in revenue, accounting for about 10% of the company’s total income. The goal is to double this figure by 2026 through acquisitions and strategic investments.
Among its most recent initiatives in the healthcare sector, UPS completed the construction of 9,000 square metres of bespoke laboratory space near its main air transport hub in Louisville. This facility, known as "Labport," has been fully booked by medical companies for the next decade and beyond. Located on UPS property, the laboratory enables test results to be processed within hours, ensuring rapid response times for patients.
This innovative programme is so distinctive that UPS Healthcare has adopted navy blue in place of its iconic corporate brown, underscoring the unique identity and importance of this division compared to its traditional operations. Today, this division operates a global network with 17 million square metres of cGMP- and GDP-compliant distribution space. It offers services including inventory management, cold-chain packaging and shipping, as well as logistics for medical devices and clinical laboratories.
