June 2024 is proving to be a challenging month for road travelers from Italy to France due to the traffic limitations at both the Mont Blanc and Frejus tunnels. Since mid-April, the Mont Blanc Tunnel has been undergoing complete nighttime closures for extraordinary maintenance, which will continue until June 20th.
Regarding the Frejus Tunnel, the Italian company managing the infrastructure, Società Italiana Traforo Autostradale del Frejus, announced that the tunnel would be completely closed to traffic from 11:00 PM on Saturday, June 22nd, until 5:00 AM on Sunday, June 23rd. Additionally, alternating one-way traffic will be in effect from 10:30 PM to 4:30 PM on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays throughout June.
Meanwhile, Italy continues to pressure France to approve the construction of the second tube of the Mont Blanc Tunnel to avoid traffic interruptions in case of the closure of the first (and currently only) tube. This was stated by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Antonio Tajani, during a conference held by Ascom Confcommercio in Turin.
