Cargolux Airlines has partnered with transporter Arthur Welter to launch a hydrogen-powered truck project. The collaboration, announced in July 2024, marks the beginning of a two-year trial with five weekly trips between Luxembourg and Frankfurt. The truck, an articulated lorry towed by an electric tractor powered by fuel cells, boasts a range of 400 kilometers and a payload capacity of 18 tons. The hydrogen tanks, with a capacity of 31.8 kilograms, can be refueled in just fifteen minutes at facilities located at both ends of the route.
“When Cargolux initiated this project, our long-term partner Arthur Welter was a natural choice for collaboration,” explained Richard Forson, President and CEO of Cargolux. “Our companies have been working together for many years, and this project reflects our shared ambition for the future of our industry. This initiative aims to showcase existing opportunities and demonstrate their adaptability to a dynamic sector like air cargo transportation.”
