On 12 December 2024, the North Adriatic Sea Port System Authority formalised an agreement with its counterpart from the Northern Tyrrhenian Sea to adopt a digital platform currently operating in Livorno for use at the port of Venice. The system, set to become operational by the end of December 2024, aims to simplify and enhance transport and customs operations, boosting the Venetian port's competitiveness in the global market.
The innovative platform, known as the Port Community System (PCS), offers an interoperable digital solution that streamlines information flows among key players in the port logistics chain, including shipping agencies, freight carriers, the Harbour Master’s Office, the Italian Financial Police, freight forwarders, terminals, and customs offices. Through a unified interface and a centralised shared database, the PCS enables efficient management of import and export procedures.
The platform’s initial modules, designed to handle cargo manifests for inbound and outbound goods, are expected to be operational by the end of the year. Throughout 2025, additional modules will be developed in collaboration with the port community, making the Port Community System an even more comprehensive tool. The implementation of the PCS has been made possible through funding from Italy’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP), which supports innovative projects for the digitalisation of port processes. The decision to adopt a proven model from Livorno reflects a strategic approach to optimising resources and accelerating the digital transformation process.
