The Italian industrial vehicle market began 2024 on a positive note, witnessing a significant rise in registrations in January. According to data processed by the Unrae Research and Statistics Center, based on information provided by the Ministry of Transport, there were 2,975 new registrations in the first month of the year, marking an increase of 16.7% compared to the same period in 2023. However, a closer look at the statistics reveals varying situations depending on vehicle size: vehicles weighing over 16 tons led the growth with 2,546 units registered (+13.7%), followed by a remarkable surge in the segment from 6.01 to 15.99 tons, which saw an increase of 53.3% compared to the previous year. Conversely, the light vehicle sector, weighing less than 6 tons (but more than 3.5 tons), experienced a slight contraction of 3.7%.
Paolo Starace, president of Unrae's Industrial Vehicles Section, welcomed these figures, highlighting how the substantial volume of new registrations could partially offset the decline observed in December 2023. However, Starace calls for caution, emphasizing the importance of not being misled by what might be interpreted as a promising but potentially misleading start to the new year. Indeed, the association's forecasts for the entire year remain cautious.
Projections indicate potential negativity in the market, influenced by a decline in demand due to macroeconomic factors and uncertainties related to the difficulties of transport companies in adopting sustainable choices, both economically and environmentally. According to Starace, addressing these challenges requires that medium- and long-term investments be supported by structural interventions, such as incentives for purchasing new vehicles and the development of adequate infrastructure.
Furthermore, the Unrae president highlights the need for a concrete commitment from the government to support the competitiveness of the transport sector, which operates in an extremely competitive international context. The call is for active and constructive dialogue with all sector operators to identify and implement urgent measures for fleet renewal and the strengthening of road safety.
