Having obtained the necessary licenses and qualifications, Mindaugas Paulauskas, CEO of the logistics giant Girteka Transport, set out in a Volvo FH with a Globetrotter XL cab, accompanied by an experienced driver. They drove a refrigerated semi-trailer from Lithuania to Norway, then to Spain, and back to Girteka's base in Siauliai, Lithuania.
In a statement, the Lithuanian company Girteka Group highlighted its commitment to addressing the driver shortage issue. The CEO's journey, termed "Mindaugas on the road," aims to shed light on the urgent challenges and opportunities in the ever-evolving transport sector. The entire project was summarized in a video blog on Youtube and shared on the company’s website and social media platforms, where Mindaugas also engaged in discussions with viewers. Each episode detailed the daily hurdles drivers face, with Paulauskas focusing on difficulties like sleeping in the vehicle, maintaining hygiene during stops, timing meals with tachograph hours, and the risks of driving and the responsibility of securing the load correctly.
"This journey was more than an exploration; it was a deep dive into the reality our drivers live every day. I witnessed their challenges, adopted their lifestyle, and now understand the critical balance they maintain between reliability and the ability to handle their duties," Paulauskas stated after the trip. "This project allowed me to firsthand assess the impact of legislative changes, the potential of digitalization, and the daily complexities our drivers face. Bridging the gap between policy and practice is crucial for fostering an environment where the profession can thrive."
With over 12,500 drivers, Girteka Transport emphasizes not only highlighting their indispensable role but also initiating a discussion on the driver shortage crisis. The International Road Transport Union (IRU) reports a staggering shortage, with over three million truck driving jobs vacant worldwide, underscoring the urgency of finding practical solutions.
"Mindaugas on the Road" is poised to underscore the critical role truck drivers play in maintaining reliable supply chains across Europe. The initiative aims to transparently showcase the daily lives of drivers, whose dedication and hard work are pivotal to the logistical network. With over 3 million truck driving vacancies globally, understanding and valuing this profession has never been more crucial. The video blog offers an insider’s view of the challenges and achievements these workers face.
The blog has garnered significant interest and attracted a wide audience, thanks in part to its engaging video format and regular updates. Many viewers, including current and aspiring drivers, have shared in Mindaugas's journey and interacted with him through comments on various platforms, enjoying freedom and lack of censorship.
