Following a four-month dispute, which included six strikes, the German train drivers' union GDL (Gewerkschaft Deutscher Lokomotivführer) has reached a work conditions agreement with Deutsche Bahn. Announced on March 25, 2024, the deal highlights the reduction of the work week to 35 hours for shift workers, maintaining the same salary level. This reform will be implemented gradually until 2029 through a flexible choice model that will allow employees to individually decide their working hours.
The first phase will start in 2026, when the work week will be reduced to 37 hours unless employees choose to keep the current 38 hours or extend them. Those opting to remain at 38 hours will receive a 2.7% pay increase. Subsequent phases include an optional reduction to 36 hours in 2027, to 35.5 hours in 2028, and to 35 hours by 2029. However, workers can choose to work up to a maximum of 40 hours per week, with a 2.7% salary increase for each additional hour.
The agreement also includes a salary increase of 420 euros per month in two installments, a one-time inflation bonus of 2,850 euros free from taxes and contributions, and a contract duration of 26 months. The union's request to extend the collective agreement to employees in the infrastructure division was not met.
