On May 6, 2024, Mercitalia Rail took delivery of its first Traxx Universal DC locomotive equipped with Last Mile technology at the Alstom plant in Vado Ligure, Savona province. This technology enables trains to connect to non-electrified areas without the need for additional shunting engines. This delivery is part of a substantial order placed with Alstom in December 2017, which includes seventy locomotives with an option for thirty more, totaling over 323 million euros.
Sabrina De Filippis, CEO of Mercitalia Logistics, stated, "With these locomotives, we are introducing a significant shift in our logistical services, demonstrating our commitment to more sustainable and efficient transport. The plan includes adding another seventy locomotives by the end of 2025." All Traxx Universal DC locomotives for Italy are produced at the Alstom facility in Vado Ligure, and those for Mercitalia Logistic come with a twelve-year maintenance contract.
The Traxx Universal DC is a four-axle locomotive designed for freight transport, noted for its energy efficiency and high traction capacity, adaptable to evolving contexts and diverse operational needs. Compared to previous models, its more functional design allows for a maintenance plan with longer intervals and fewer interventions, maintaining high levels of reliability and availability.
