ENAC has published its report on Italian air traffic for the first half of 2024, revealing a significant rise in cargo volumes. From January to June 2024, Italian airports managed 600,557 tons of cargo, an 18% increase compared to the same period in 2023 and a 16% rise from 2019, before the pandemic. The majority of this volume is attributed to international transport, with only 38,587 tons moved domestically, reflecting a 17.5% decrease from 2023.
The remaining 562,030 tons, accounting for 94% of the total, were transported internationally, showing a 21.6% increase. Thirty percent of this traffic involved EU countries, followed by Asia Pacific (23%), the Middle East (18%), North America (14%), and non-EU Europe (11%). Marginal shares were noted for South America (3%) and Africa and the Indian Ocean (2%). When considering growth rates for the first half of the year, the most significant increase was seen on routes to Asia Pacific (+75%), while the EU was the only area to show a decline (-8%).
According to data from Assaeroporti (up to May 2024), Malpensa remains at the forefront of Italian cargo with 302,244.7 tons (solely by air), registering a 12.8% increase over the same period in 2023. It is followed by Rome Fiumicino with 101,478.4 tons (+66.4%), Venice with 20,390.2 tons (+17.7%), Bologna with 18,743 tons (+8.1%), Rome Ciampino with 6,135.5 tons (+7.4%), and Brescia with 5,485.8 tons (-2.5%).
