According to Intermodal Shipbrokers, MSC has ordered six vessels from Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding, each with a capacity of 19,000 TEU. These ships, priced at $210 million each, will be equipped with dual-fuel engines capable of operating on both liquefied natural gas (LNG) and traditional fuels. This configuration not only offers greater operational flexibility but also significantly reduces CO2 emissions. The delivery of these ships is expected between 2027 and 2028.
Additionally, MSC has commissioned twelve more container ships from Penglai Jinglu, a different Chinese shipyard. This contract includes the construction of eight vessels, with an option for four more. These ships will have a slightly smaller capacity of 11,500 TEU, and like the larger vessels, they will feature LNG dual-fuel engines. The cost of each ship is estimated at $140 million, with delivery also scheduled between 2027 and 2028.
