On August 27, 2024, the cargo aircraft B767F with registration number A9C-DHAA, belonging to DHL, was involved in an accident during landing at Malpensa Airport at 8:55 PM. The Italian National Flight Safety Authority, in a statement on August 29, confirmed that the aircraft suffered damage to the lower part of the fuselage and the tail, although the crew was unharmed. The Authority has initiated a safety investigation and has retrieved the flight recorders from the aircraft. The B767F had departed from Bahrain.
In July 2024, a similar tail strike incident occurred with a Latam Brasil B777 passenger aircraft during takeoff for São Paulo. Before lifting off, the tail of the aircraft scraped the runway for 720 meters. The pilots declared an emergency, jettisoned fuel, and landed safely. No injuries were reported among the 398 people on board. Preliminary investigations by the Italian National Flight Safety Authority revealed a serious pilot error in entering the aircraft's weight into the onboard computer, leading to incorrect takeoff parameters. Latam subsequently dismissed the three pilots involved—the captain, a captain in training, and an instructor captain.
