CargoBeamer doubles Calais-Perpignan service
CargoBeamer has announced it will double the frequency of its rail services for semi-trailers on the Calais-Perpignan route. Starting October 7, 2024, weekly trips will increase from two to four, offering greater flexibility for the transportation of non-craneable semi-trailers and containers. This 1,400 km route spans from northern to southern France, reducing CO2 emissions by up to 47 tons per trip.
Typhoon Yagi closes some asian airports
As expected, Typhoon Yagi made landfall on September 6, 2024, along China’s southern coast, bringing winds of up to 150 km/h and heavy rain. Several airports, including Hong Kong, Hainan, and Guangdong, were forced to suspend flights due to intense gusts. The *South China Morning Post* reported that a Cathay Pacific flight to Taiwan encountered severe turbulence, injuring two crew members and four passengers. The storm also affected Vietnam, where 330 flights, including 70 international ones, were canceled as four airports suspended operations. Over 400,000 people were evacuated from Hainan Island. While no significant damage to port infrastructure has been reported, the weather is expected to disrupt navigation. After striking Vietnam’s coast, the typhoon is forecast to move inland.
Customs simplifications extended with France and Switzerland
In response to the closure of the Mont Blanc tunnel from September 2 to December 16, 2024, the Italian Customs and Monopoly Agency has renewed an agreement with France and Switzerland to simplify customs transit procedures. Andrea Mazzella, the Director of International Relations at the agency, stated that the agreement aims to mitigate the economic impact of the tunnel's closure on businesses in the Aosta Valley by facilitating transport through Switzerland.
DSV leads in DB Schenker acquisition bid
Rumors suggest that DSV is leading the race to acquire Deutsche Bahn’s Schenker logistics unit. DSV's offer is reportedly the most competitive, following a government committee meeting that also evaluated a bid from a consortium led by CVC Capital Partners.
EU approves funding for Cuxhaven Port
The European Commission has approved €200 million in state aid from Germany to support the construction of four new berths at the Port of Cuxhaven. Managed by Niedersachsen Ports, the project aims to bolster the port’s role as an offshore industrial hub, particularly for wind farm components. The total investment amounts to €300 million, with NPorts contributing €100 million. The Commission deemed the project necessary to promote renewable energy and approved the measure under EU state aid rules.
