The Sounion is in Safe Waters
Under the protection of Eunavfor Aspides, the oil tanker *Sounion* has been successfully towed to safe waters without any oil spillage. Recovery operations are still underway by private entities involved, while Aspides continues to monitor the situation. This phase of the operation reflects the close cooperation between all parties, aimed at preventing an environmental disaster. Eunavfor Aspides has not disclosed the ship's location or its destination port. The tanker was hit by the Houthis in August, causing multiple fires on board and forcing the crew to abandon ship.
Intra-Asia Container Rates Drop
Average spot rates on major intra-Asian trade routes saw a further decline in the first two weeks of September 2024, according to the newly launched Intra-Asia Container Index (IACI) by Drewry. The composite IACI index, which reflects container shipping rates, dropped by 25% to $668 per 40-foot container, after peaking at $1,025 in July. Drewry highlighted increasing price volatility in the region, in line with decreasing demand.
Poland Orders 288 Trucks for Military Logistics
Scania and Celtech will deliver 288 fuel tankers to the Polish military. The contract includes two versions: the CD10 and the CD27 Kayman. The CD10, mounted on a 6x6 chassis, carries 10,000 liters of fuel and is powered by a 460-horsepower engine, while the CD27 Kayman, on a 6x4 chassis, can transport up to 27,000 liters. These vehicles, designed for operations on rough terrain and long distances, will significantly enhance the Polish army’s logistical capabilities.
Ikea Expands AI-Powered Drones
Ikea is expanding its AI-powered warehouse management drone program in its distribution centers across Europe and North America. Developed in collaboration with Verity, the drones conduct real-time inventory checks, reducing manual labor and improving operational efficiency. Operating 24/7, these autonomous devices navigate through high storage spaces, avoiding obstacles and following pre-programmed routes. Launched in 2021, the initiative has already deployed 250 drones across 73 locations, contributing to improved employee well-being.
