The weekly data from the World Container Index, released by Drewry on October 31, 2024, reveal a sharp reversal in average spot rates for maritime container shipping. After nearly three months of steady decline, rates are once again on the rise. The route showing the most significant growth is between Shanghai and Genoa, which saw an 11% increase in just one week, reaching $3,648 per FEU. This is followed by the Shanghai-Rotterdam route, which increased by 8% to $3,396.
Transatlantic shipping rates remain steady at $2,664 per FEU between Rotterdam and New York and at $760 in the opposite direction. Meanwhile, rates between Shanghai and Los Angeles have risen slightly, by 1%, in both directions: $5,241 per FEU from China to the U.S. and $718 in the reverse direction. Only one downward trend was recorded—a 1% decrease in rates from Rotterdam to Shanghai, now standing at $543 per FEU. Drewry predicts that rates will continue to rise throughout the pre-holiday season.
