Schmitz Cargobull has achieved a significant milestone in the trailer manufacturing sector, producing the two-millionth axle at its Altenberge plant in late September 2024. This achievement highlights the company's ongoing commitment to optimising its axle production facilities, a journey that began in 2004 with the launch of the first axle bearing the German company's branding.
Axles play a crucial role in reducing operational costs and increasing the economic efficiency of trailers. Aware of this, Schmitz Cargobull has continuously invested in enhancing its axles and production technologies. A key step forward was the introduction in 2023 of a fully automated, digitally controlled production process at the Altenberge plant, part of the strategy to transform its facilities into "smart factories".
The modern production processes at Altenberge enable the supply of axles to other company plants located in Germany (Vreden and Gotha), Lithuania (Panevėžys), Turkey (Adapazarı), Spain (Zaragoza), and the UK (Manchester). Approximately 95% of trailers produced at Altenberge and over 90% of vehicles across the entire Group are equipped with Schmitz Cargobull's in-house axles, underscoring their importance and prevalence within the company's portfolio.
The Schmitz Cargobull axle range is extensive, encompassing not only the standard model with 22.5" disc brakes but also several specialised variants. Among these are axles for high-volume trailers with 19.5" disc brakes and self-steering axles, which are known for superior cornering performance and reduced tyre wear. Additionally, drum brake axles are available for specific markets.
One of the most exciting innovations is the axle with an electric generator, designed for the fully electric S.KOe Cool refrigerated semi-trailer. This axle regenerates energy during the trailer's movement, extending the operating time of the cooling unit and enhancing the efficiency of the refrigerated vehicle. The electrified axle, first unveiled at the IAA 2024 exhibition, marks a significant step forward towards sustainability and reducing environmental impact in the road transport sector.
