Following a modest rebound in the second week of November 2024, average spot rates for container shipping softened between China and Europe, partially reversing the gains of the previous week. According to the World Container Index figures released by Drewry on 28 November, the rate from Shanghai to Genoa fell by 1%, settling at $4,490 per FEU. The decline was slightly steeper on the Shanghai-Rotterdam route, which dropped by 2%, slipping below the $4,000 threshold to $3,997. In the opposite direction, the rate fell by just $1, reaching $518 per FEU.
On trans-Pacific routes, the most notable decrease was observed between Shanghai and Los Angeles, where rates dropped by 5%, bringing the average spot rate per FEU down to $4,250. In the opposite direction, rates remained unchanged at $721. The Shanghai-New York route experienced a more moderate 1% decline, with rates standing at $5,182 per FEU.
In the Atlantic market, the Rotterdam-New York route held steady at $2,665 per FEU, while rates in the reverse direction dipped by 1%, settling at $789 per FEU. Drewry anticipates stability in rates for the coming week.
