The long-awaited reopening of the Tenda tunnel, which connects Italy to France via the Colle di Tenda, has been delayed once again. Originally scheduled to open by the end of 2024, the tunnel’s opening has now been postponed until the spring of 2025, following a decision by the French government. Alberto Cirio, President of the Piedmont Region, expressed his frustration over the French decision, stating, "Someone must pay for the damages that are being incurred." Cirio highlighted the economic hardships faced by local communities due to the prolonged closure of the tunnel, which has had a detrimental impact on tourism and local businesses.
Edoardo Rixi, Deputy Minister for Transport, recently visited the Tenda tunnel for an on-site inspection, confirming that the necessary works for reopening in a limited construction mode had been completed. However, French authorities raised concerns regarding the safety of such a solution, which led to the further postponement. Meanwhile, testing and finalisation of the required infrastructure for the tunnel's full reopening continue. Recently, Anas completed the testing of the new bridge over the Rio della Cà, a crucial component for the connection between Italy and France.
