A new Italian partnership between Polo Logistica FS, Baraclit and Murano was unveiled on 13 March 2025 during the conference "The Role of Logistics in the Energy Transition and Economic Growth," organised by Alis as part of the LetExpo trade fair in Verona. This initiative involves the combined road-rail transport of concrete prefabricated structures and serves as a tangible example of integrated logistics, where rail transport plays a crucial role in connecting production plants and construction sites while reducing reliance on lorries.
The concrete structures manufactured by Baraclit at its Bibbiena (Arezzo) plant are directly loaded onto trains operated by Trasporto Ferroviario Toscano. The convoy, managed by Mercitalia Rail, reaches the Marcianise terminal (Caserta), where Mercitalia Shunting & Terminal oversees their transfer onto lorries for final delivery to the construction site. This system leverages the efficiency of different transport modes: rail for long-distance journeys and road for the last mile.
According to estimates from Polo Logistica FS, adopting this model will remove approximately 280 lorries from the road network, resulting in a saving of around 195 tonnes of CO₂ compared to an exclusively road-based transport solution. "The synergy between the companies within Polo Logistica represents a fundamental step in our Strategic Plan, which aims to integrate different transport segments into a systemic approach, with rail as the main carrier for long distances," stated Sabrina De Filippis, CEO of Mercitalia Logistics. "The cultural innovation we are experiencing within Polo Logistica at the FS Group places the customer at the centre of operational processes and promotes strategic partnerships with a strong focus on sustainability."
This new logistics model aligns with a phase of strategic growth for Murano, a company operating in the dried fruit sector under the Fatina brand. As it celebrates 80 years of activity, the company is constructing a new facility using prefabricated structures supplied by Baraclit. This initiative also fits into the intermodal transport strategy promoted by Polo Logistica, continuing the ferro-sea-road project carried out last year in collaboration with Baraclit and the Grendi Group.
