On 11 April 2025, the 15,000 TEU container ship Maersk Camden docked at the Vado Gateway terminal in Savona, initiating the new Gemini service operated by Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd under the ME2/AE11 label. It is the first of twelve vessels scheduled to call at the main ports on the Mediterranean–Far East route, including La Spezia, Genoa, Vado Ligure, Singapore, Shanghai, Yantian, Tanjung Pelepas and Tangier.
“We are pleased to have inaugurated the important new ME2/AE11 service,” said Santi Casciano, CEO of Vado Gateway. “This new connection, the third since the beginning of the year, further reinforces the central role of the Vado Ligure container terminal on the major global trade routes. We are confident we will soon be able to announce new services, supported by the high technological standards that define the Vado platform and the expertise of our operators.”
In addition to the launch of new services, 2025 has already marked a significant operational milestone for the terminal, which has handled more than 31,800 movements in the first few months of the year. Each quay crane – four in total – has achieved an average of 28 container moves per hour. This result was also boosted by the launch of two new weekly services: one to North American ports, also under the Gemini alliance, and another to West African ports, operated by Maersk. Noteworthy ad hoc calls have also taken place, such as that of the Cosco Shipping Nebula, a 21,000 TEU vessel measuring 400 metres in length, the largest ever handled by the terminal since its opening in 2020. During that single call, over seven thousand container moves were completed.
