The era of fast charging for electric industrial vehicles is drawing closer. A significant step forward occurred on March 21, 2024, in Munich, where ABB E-Mobility and MAN Truck unveiled the Megawatt Charging Station (MCS). The facility delivers power exceeding 700 kW at a thousand amperes, which, according to MAN Truck, means charging the batteries of a truck from 10% to 80% in just half an hour. Michael Halbherr, CEO of ABB E-mobility, states that "sustainable long-distance transport with trucks and buses will be possible in the near future. We have demonstrated that today. Even though we are still presenting a prototype; with the new MCS standard, we have not only doubled the amperage but also the charging capacity within a few years."
MAN Truck's CEO, Alexander Vlaskamp, added, "The goal is 30,000 MCS charging points in Europe by 2030, 4,000 of which in Germany. Today we have activated one of the first charging points. We do not have much time to implement it. The electric trucks are available, megawatt charging works. Now we need clear signals from politicians, not least to build trust among our customers in favor of electrification. We now need to quickly build and expand the infrastructure."
