At Bauma 2025 in Munich, Scania is presenting a new range of electric and hybrid drive systems tailored to the needs of construction and mining transport. At the heart of the Swedish manufacturer’s innovation is a fully in-house developed system that integrates an electric motor (with built-in clutch), inverter, batteries and internal combustion engine in a parallel hybrid configuration. Everything is managed by a central control unit, supported by a cooling system, charging interfaces, mechanical connections, Vcb cables and other auxiliary components. This architecture enables a gradual transition to full electrification, offering operational flexibility that suits various scenarios and applications.
The electric mode ensures silent operation, ideal for urban environments and for improving working conditions for operators. The hybrid mode, on the other hand, delivers additional power and range, particularly useful in demanding operating conditions or remote locations. The system is designed as a turnkey modular solution, allowing customers to tailor the configuration to their specific needs while simplifying integration with existing vehicles and industrial equipment.
One of the highlights of Scania’s presence at Bauma is the debut of a new modular electric vehicle developed in collaboration with Cometto, the Italian company of the Faymonville Group that specialises in exceptional transport and heavy load handling. This is a fully electric self-propelled modular transporter (SPMT), designed for sectors such as wind energy, power generation, aerospace, industrial construction and heavy mechanics. The vehicle delivers high performance thanks to strong torque, a compact design, fast charging, long operational range and zero emissions.
The new SPMT marks a significant milestone for Cometto, which for the first time is integrating an electric powerpack from Scania after years of using the brand’s internal combustion engines. “For over fifty years we have been innovating in the field of self-propelled transport. Our collaboration with Scania has proven reliable and robust,” said Adrian Zingan, product manager at Cometto. “For this new generation of standardised SPMTs, we were looking for a partner capable of delivering a complete and seamlessly integrable solution, and we found that in Scania.” The first unit of the new vehicle will be delivered to Mammoet shortly after the trade fair.
