On 19 December 2024, an unprecedented strike began across Amazon's logistics platforms in the United States. Organised by the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, the protest spans facilities in California, Illinois, New York, Georgia, and other states, marking one of the most significant labour relations challenges faced by the company. Amazon operates an extensive logistics network across the US, comprising distribution centres, warehouses, sorting facilities, and delivery hubs. With over one million direct employees, the company has built an impressive infrastructure, including 386 logistics facilities, 159 fulfilment centres, and 115 local delivery stations.
The workers, represented by the Teamsters, called the strike to protest a series of issues they deem unacceptable. Chief among these is Amazon's refusal to negotiate a collective bargaining agreement addressing higher wages, better benefits, and safer working conditions. The failure to meet the 15 December deadline for commencing negotiations was interpreted by the union as a violation of federal labour laws. Many workers complain of inadequate pay, especially considering the company's substantial profits. Some drivers, after covering expenses such as fuel and insurance, reportedly earn as little as $5.30 per hour—a situation they consider intolerable.
Working conditions in warehouses have also emerged as a critical concern. Furthermore, Amazon has been accused of implementing anti-union measures to hinder worker organisation, fostering a corporate culture that allegedly disregards fundamental employee rights. The strike began with picketing at seven facilities, including a warehouse in San Francisco and six delivery centres in other states. By 20 December, the mobilisation expanded to the massive JFK8 warehouse in Staten Island, New York.
According to the union, approximately 10,000 workers across ten facilities are represented by the Teamsters, although the exact number of participants remains unconfirmed. Amazon has downplayed the strike’s impact, claiming its operations have not been significantly affected and accusing the Teamsters of spreading misleading information. Nevertheless, the union continues to rally both employees and external contractors, aiming to broaden the scope of the protest. If prolonged, the strike could lead to substantial delivery delays, particularly during the holiday season, and could influence public perception of Amazon.
