Artificial intelligence can be introduced into transportation and logistics in various areas, and one of these is security, through pairing with devices capable of perceiving reality. The case of the surveillance system and the PSA Pra’ container terminal in the Port of Genoa is an example. Recently, terminal operator PSA Italy introduced the AiVu artificial intelligence system by Aitek into its network of 150 high-resolution cameras distributed throughout the terminal. This system is expected to automatically detect potential danger situations, in collaboration with the security personnel.
The partnership between PSA Italy and Aitek began in 2003 with the installation of the first analog cameras. Since then, the security system has been constantly updated and improved, culminating in the creation of the AiVu platform, which represents the state of the art in video surveillance. The heart of the Genoa Pra’ surveillance system lies in its ability to process images through deep learning-based video analysis algorithms.
These algorithms, learning from experience, can automatically recognize potential security threats without being constrained by predefined mathematical models. This provides significant support for operators, who are alerted by visual and auditory signals in case of detection of abnormal situations. In addition to signaling alarms, the system provides operators with a detailed view of events, automatically initiating tracking and zooming on images to observe every significant detail.
This allows for a comprehensive and detailed view of emergency situations, thus improving response capabilities. The video analysis algorithms of the AiVu system can detect various potentially dangerous situations, from the presence of people in sensitive areas to the detection of unauthorized access. Looking to the future, the potential of this technology is immense: continuous learning and the extension of its applications promise to further elevate the standards of security and efficiency in port terminals and beyond.
