On January 13, 2024, a new regulation came into effect in the Austrian A12 Inntal and A13 Brenner highways, banning heavy vehicle traffic on Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. The ban targets vehicles with a total mass exceeding 7.5 tons travelling towards Italy (or another country accessible through Italy) and in the direction of Germany (or another country reachable via Germany). This restriction remains in force through March 9.
Following the announcement of these new restrictions, FAI Conftrasporto has called on the Italian Government to urge the European Commission for the immediate removal of all barriers to crossing the Alpine arc. Paolo Uggè, the President, emphasizes that “the European economy needs to find a way to swiftly transport goods to Northern European countries, not just via Gibraltar,” but also through enhancing and utilizing the functionality of Italian ports, “enabling goods to reach Northern Europe in 3-4 days”.
