On May 16, 2024, the Reefer Terminal in Vado Ligure, a major hub for Mediterranean fruit logistics, announced the activation of a new automatic entry system for loading and unloading containers. This innovation completes the automation of all container gates within the Vado Gateway port system, improving workplace safety and operational efficiency.
The new gate employs cameras to recognize truck license plates and totems for communication with terminal staff. These enhancements allow truck drivers to perform loading and unloading operations without leaving their cabs, thereby increasing safety for all operators. Additionally, two protected areas have been established for inspecting container locking systems on vehicles, ensuring greater safety during operations.
Thanks to these innovations, the Reefer Terminal reports that truck access and exit times have been significantly reduced, improving the turnaround time for trucks. This not only enhances the efficiency of operations within the port infrastructure but also increases the capacity to handle a higher volume of cargo traffic safely and quickly.
Upon entering the terminal, cameras capture the vehicle's license plate number, allowing the operating system to verify the trip's validity, schedule yard operations, and send work orders to operational vehicles through ticket issuance. This ticket instructs the driver on the correct procedures, including the loading/unloading location and any additional services required, such as weighing. Upon exit, cameras again verify the license plate, and the system issues a receipt to the truck driver confirming the completion of operations.
Santi Casciano, CEO of Vado Gateway and Reefer Terminal, stated, "With this significant investment, we offer better service to truck drivers while simultaneously increasing safety levels for both drivers and our operators. The activation of the Reefer Terminal Gate completes the automation of entry points within the Vado Gateway port system for container handling."
The Reefer Terminal can also handle dry containers for non-refrigerated goods. Located in Vado Ligure (Savona) within the Vado Gateway port system, the terminal has strengthened its position through investments in advanced technologies. It currently has the capacity to handle up to 250,000 TEUs and 600,000 tons of produce, with a 24,000 square meter refrigerated warehouse housing fourteen temperature-controlled rooms.
