On March 21, 2021, Captrain Italy announced a strategic partnership with Railpool, a leading company in the leasing of railway rolling stock, aimed at enhancing its Italian fleet. Through this agreement, Captrain will transfer its fleet of thirteen Alstom Traxx DC3 locomotives, equipped with Last Mile technology, to Railpool, which will then lease them back to Captrain under a long-term contract. Captrain stated that this move would allow it to consolidate its fleet while benefiting from a long-term agreement that includes comprehensive maintenance services provided by Railpool.
These thirteen locomotives will join the nineteen already leased from Railpool, with an additional eight set to arrive in the second half of 2024. "Our collaboration with Railpool enables us to swiftly proceed with our fleet renewal plan, which is nearing completion," said Mauro Pessano, CEO of Captrain Italy. "Captrain's customers will benefit from high-quality locomotives in terms of traction, reliability, and cost-efficiency, along with advantages like Last Mile technology and better readiness for future Ertms implementation." Once fully implemented, Captrain will operate a uniform fleet of thirty-two locomotives, significantly improving operational management.
