The prolonged stop of the train, loaded with cars and bound for Piadena, prompted an unknown number of thieves to strip parts from the vehicles. According to an article by Ilnotiziario.net, the train had arrived at Desio station, north of Milan, from Switzerland before the Christmas holidays. Instead of continuing its journey, it was left parked on a siding in the Lombard station. Its considerable length made it visible even from the overpass connecting Milan to Lecco. Possibly due to the holiday period, the train remained stationary until the night of 7–8 January 2025.
The extended stop and visibility from the road encouraged some individuals to organise thefts targeting components from the vehicles loaded onto the carrier wagons, as taking the entire cars was obviously unfeasible. The newspaper reports that the thefts occurred over several days, with parts such as windows, bumpers, and electronic components being removed. This piecemeal plundering continued despite occasional interventions by the Railway Police, who had been alerted to the presence of individuals in the restricted area.
