2024 ended with encouraging results for Sea, the company that oversees Malpensa and Linate airports. The cargo sector, in particular, stood out, having moved 728,000 tonnes of goods over the year—an increase of 9% on 2023. This figure confirms Malpensa’s strategic role as a key logistics hub for northern Italy and the country as a whole. The growth was driven both by full cargo flights and passenger flights carrying goods in their holds. The airport operator’s cargo revenue reached 55 million euros, up 7.4% from 2023, with Malpensa’s Cargocity playing a decisive role in this achievement.
In 2024, import and export flows through Malpensa reached a value of 58.1 billion euros, equivalent to 4.9% of Italy’s total foreign trade in terms of goods value. Notably, the Lombard airport accounts for 6.2% of the country’s overall export value, a share that rises to 11.3% for exports outside the European Union. The socio-economic impact of the Milan airport system was estimated at 45.6 billion euros, with over 297,000 jobs generated.
Alongside cargo, passenger traffic also exceeded pre-Covid levels, reaching 39.3 million travellers, an increase of 12%. Malpensa welcomed 28.7 million passengers in 2024, up 11%, while Linate recorded 10.6 million, up 13%. This performance translated into operating revenues of 823.1 million euros, a rise of 7.9%, and a net profit of 170.6 million euros, up 9.2%. Net financial debt fell to 254.4 million euros.
2025 appears to be starting on a positive note. In the first months of the year, Sea recorded a further increase in traffic at both Linate and Malpensa, driven by higher flight movements and improved load factors. On the route front, new direct connections will be launched in May to Boston (Delta) and Philadelphia (American Airlines), while from July Vietnam Airlines will begin a service linking Malpensa to Hanoi—the first direct flight between Italy and Vietnam. With these developments, Sea expects results for the current year to be at least in line with those of 2024, laying the groundwork for further consolidation of its leading position in freight and passenger transport.
