Munich Airport is set to strengthen its position in the cargo transportation sector with a new strategic partnership. Chi Aviation Handling, part of the Chi Cargo Group, has acquired a 74.9% stake in Cargogate Munich Airport, a company founded in 1974 and fully owned by Munich Airport until now. The remaining 25.1% stake will remain with the airport, ensuring an active participation in the management of the cargo sector.
Founded in 1974, Cargogate Munich Airport provides cargo handling services for Munich Airport. With an operational area of approximately 17,000 square meters, the company manages the entire logistics chain: from receipt and sorting to assembly and delivery of goods, as well as handling customs procedures and hazardous materials.
This acquisition marks a significant step in Chi Group's expansion strategy, which is already active in cargo handling and airline services at airports in Frankfurt, Nuremberg, Hamburg, and Amsterdam. By entering the Munich market, Chi Group further broadens its portfolio with the aim of strengthening Germany’s air cargo market and increasing activity volume at one of Europe’s key hubs.
The new corporate structure will be officially established in January 2025, pending approval by the relevant authorities. Once Chi Aviation Handling secures the majority stake, the company will continue to operate under the name Cargogate, maintaining its identity and brand. A crucial element of the agreement is job security, with the approximately 150 Cargogate employees guaranteed their positions under the new ownership.
