On March 29, 2024, the Port System Authority of the Sea of Sardinia handed over the construction of the new ro-ro terminal at the port of Cagliari to a group of companies led by Rcm Costruzioni and consisting of Fincosit, Società Italiana Dragaggi, and Impresa Pellegrini. The contract is worth about 290 million euros, within an economic framework that nearly reaches 338 million euros. The funding for this first phase, amounting to 99.35 million euros, comes from the Recovery and Resilience Plan. The initial works, starting on April 2, include environmental mitigation and the clearing of war remnants from the affected areas.
The construction of the terminal, which must be completed within 1750 days, will involve the construction of six moorings and a maneuvering basin with an eleven-meter depth. Designed to accommodate about 2,500 parking spaces for semi-trailers and areas for dangerous goods, the facility will feature a passenger terminal enhanced with services, ticket offices, offices, and a panoramic terrace for traveler refreshment.
