On the night of Friday, 14 February 2025, the Maltese-flagged oil tanker Seajewel, arriving from Algeria, experienced an incident while moored at the buoy field of Savona's port. During crude oil unloading operations, the crew reported two loud explosions. Subsequently, a breach approximately one metre wide was discovered in the hull, with the metal bent inward, suggesting an external cause. Fortunately, there were no oil spills or injuries.
Authorities are investigating to determine the origin of the incident. The hypotheses under consideration include a technical malfunction, collision with wartime ordnance, or possible sabotage. The Savona Prosecutor's Office has opened a case and involved the Anti-Mafia District Directorate of Genoa to further the investigation. It has also emerged that the Seajewel had been mentioned in some journalistic inquiries regarding the so-called Russian "shadow fleets," tankers that continue to supply Europe despite sanctions against Moscow. This element has raised further questions about the possible motive behind the incident.
The Harbour Master's Office specified that during unloading operations, anomalies were detected, leading to the suspension of activities as a precaution. Technical assessments are underway on board to identify the origin of these anomalies and ensure the safety of future operations. At this time, investigations are ongoing, and all hypotheses remain open.
