In March 2024, the German rail freight company DB Cargo placed an order with Siemens Mobility for 150 Vectron Dual Mode Light diesel-electric hybrid locomotives, designed with a lighter tare weight for operation on secondary lines and sidings with low load capacity. These state-of-the-art locomotives are capable of switching seamlessly from electric to diesel traction, eliminating downtime associated with switching modes and significantly enhancing operational flexibility. With this acquisition, DB Cargo aims to save approximately 12 million liters of fuel and reduce CO2 emissions by 25,000 tons annually. The diesel engine is also compatible with HVO biodiesel.
The initial units will be deployed at the Halle (Saale) marshalling yard in Saxony-Anhalt and Saxony. DB Cargo's objective is to equip about 70% of its diesel locomotives with innovative propulsion systems by 2030. The Vectron Dual Mode Light locomotives have been specifically enhanced to meet DB Cargo's requirements, making them lighter than their predecessors.
This weight reduction not only contributes to greater energy savings but also enables access to secondary lines and sidings with lower load capacities, thereby improving the speed and efficiency of individual cargo transportation. These locomotives come equipped with advanced technologies, including remote control for shunting operations and the European Train Control System (ETCS).
