In a significant move to improve rail infrastructure, Deutsche Bahn is poised to expand the Hanau-Gelnhausen line to four tracks, spanning a crucial 23-kilometer segment in the heart of Hesse. This expansion is critical as it supports the dense traffic flow on the Mannheim-Frankfurt-Fulda-Erfurt axis and the Rhine corridor's primarily freight traffic.
The new four-track line is designed not only to boost overall railway capacity but also to segregate different types of rail traffic. Freight trains will have two dedicated central tracks, allowing for smoother and more efficient transit. The project's implications extend beyond regional borders, promising enhanced connectivity and reduced travel times across the network.
Despite Deutsche Bahn's extensive program focusing on modernizing existing networks—which consumes a significant portion of its financial resources—the necessity to create additional capacity has not been overlooked. The four-track line will adhere to the highest standards, with a maximum speed of 230 km/h for fast passenger trains and advanced management and signaling technologies.
While the expansion between Hanau and Gelnhausen is significant, it is part of a broader investment along the corridor from Mannheim to Erfurt. A similar project is planned between Gelnhausen and Fulda, covering about sixty kilometers with a two-track layout designed to navigate the challenging local topography through numerous tunnels. Fulda is strategically positioned on the Hannover-Würzburg high-speed line, which also serves freight traffic.
In 2023, the regional planning phase for this segment was completed, setting the stage for final design and construction. Overall, as part of the Strong Rail project, Deutsche Bahn is prepared to invest €1.6 billion in Hesse's railway infrastructure. Initiated in 2017, the comprehensive freight transport plan aims to bolster the competitiveness of rail transport in Germany. Deutsche Bahn has committed to investing €86 billion by 2030 to renovate the national railway network, underscoring its commitment to enhancing rail transport infrastructure and efficiency.
