Container handling in Europe is witnessing a significant development with Swissterminal Holding becoming part of the global network of the Dubai-based multinational Dp World. The Arab logistics giant has now acquired full ownership of the Swiss firm, having previously purchased a 44% stake from the Mayer family in January 2020, thereby entering a new phase of European expansion. Swissterminal Holding announced the completion of the transaction on 19 March 2025, though the financial details were not disclosed.
Founded in 1972, Swissterminal Holding has long been an important player in freight transportation across Switzerland and France. With terminals strategically located in the Basel region of Switzerland and in Alsace, France, the company efficiently connects the markets of Switzerland, southern Germany, and France to major European seaports. Swissterminal’s services range from cargo handling and storage at inland terminals to an extensive rail and barge transportation network, ensuring frequent connections and reduced transit times to destination markets.
Full integration into Dp World will enable Swissterminal to strengthen its portfolio of integrated logistics solutions, offering increased flexibility to customer requirements. By gaining direct access to Dp World’s extensive global resources and networks, the Swiss firm will significantly expand its service range, enabling diversified transportation modes, shorter transit times, and environmentally sustainable solutions.
Swissterminal already provides advanced logistical solutions, including Europe's first online booking system for inland terminal slots, which has considerably reduced waiting times and enhanced operational efficiency. The company operates strategic container terminals including Frenkendorf, Basel-Birsfelden, Basel-Kleinhueningen, Liestal, and Zurich-Niederglatt in Switzerland, along with the French terminals Ottmarsheim, Huningue-Village-Neuf, and Ile Napoléon through its subsidiary Alsaceterminal.
Despite integration into the Dp World group, Swissterminal will retain its existing corporate identity. The brand, company name, and operational practices will remain unchanged, ensuring a seamless transition without disruption for customers and suppliers. However, the leadership team will undergo changes, with Matthias Dischinger immediately taking the role of chief executive officer, supported by Tatiana Mayer as commercial director, and Fabrice Marti continuing as chief financial officer. Roman Mayer, a long-standing figure within the company, will remain active as a strategic advisor on the board, ensuring stability and operational support.
To further strengthen Swissterminal’s competitive position, Dp World plans substantial infrastructure investments in Switzerland and the cross-border region, focusing specifically on innovative and sustainable logistics solutions.
