On October 10, 2024, aircraft manufacturer Embraer received certification from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration for its first cargo aircraft and the Cargo Loading System, developed by U.S. Cargo Systems. The new model, called the E-Freighter, is a cargo conversion of the passenger E190 aircraft. In July, the aircraft was certified by Brazil's ANAC, and it is expected to receive certification from the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) by the end of the year.
Embraer announced the E-Freighter program in May 2022 to address changes in e-commerce and the growing demand for rapid, decentralized logistics operations that support distribution to regional markets. The E-Freighter completed its maiden flight in April 2024 and made its first public appearance at the Farnborough Airshow in July.
This model will offer 40% greater cargo capacity, triple the range of large turboprop cargo aircraft, and up to 30% lower operating costs compared to other narrowbody models. Combining its two-deck capacity, the aircraft's maximum structural payload reaches 13,500 kg. It has a range of 4,260 kilometers when fully loaded, and Embraer aims to sell approximately 700 units over the next 20 years.
"The FAA certification marks a significant milestone in our passenger-to-cargo conversion program," said Martyn Holmes, Chief Commercial Officer of Embraer Commercial Aviation. "We are excited to enter this market, filling a gap that has emerged to meet the growing global demand for rapid deliveries, not only to metropolitan areas but also to all regions."
