The DG Move directorate of the European Commission is prompting international transporters, operating vehicles with a total mass exceeding 3.5 tons equipped with analog or non-smart (or "intelligent") digital tachographs, to plan ahead for their replacement with second-generation smart tachographs. The directorate advises that the best time for this upgrade is during the device's biennial inspection, as this timing can help avoid additional downtime for truck servicing. According to DG Move, about eighty percent of commercial vehicles will need to replace their tachograph by the end of 2024.
It is also noted that vehicles currently equipped with a first-generation smart tachograph must upgrade to a second-generation device, though they have until August 18, 2025, to do so. Italian hauliers association Assotir echoes this call to action, stating that “the aim is to prevent possible delays due to lack of components or the overload of specialized workshops, situations that could cause inconvenience and slow down the daily operations of transport companies.”
