The fire erupted aboard the Asl Bauhinia (IMO: 9935868), a container ship with a capacity of 1,800 TEU, on the morning of Tuesday, 28 January 2025, forcing the crew to evacuate. All crew members were rescued by another nearby vessel. The Asl Bauhinia, which flies the Hong Kong flag, is owned by the Chinese company Asean Seas Line, which has yet to release a statement on the incident. The cause of the fire remains unknown. The Asl Bauhinia operates as a feeder ship on a regular service between the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia, managed by China United Lines. The vessel is relatively new, having been built in 2022. According to VesselFinder, the ship had departed from the port of Jebel Ali in the UAE on 22 January, bound for Jeddah and later Aqaba.
