The torrential rains, part of a meteorological phenomenon known as "isolated high-altitude depression," have led to severe flooding that paralyzed Valencia on October 29 and 30, 2024 , home to one of the key container ports in the western Mediterranean. The port, along with its container terminals, was forced to shut down until 2 p.m. on October 30. Ports in Sagunto and Gandía also suspended operations.
The rail corridor between Valencia and Barcelona has been cut off, and the situation on local and national roads remains critical. Major disruptions are reported on the A-7/AP-7 highways heading towards Valencia, including access ramps towards the south, and on the A-23 near Sagunto, heading towards Teruel, as well as several sections of the A-3 and A-35 highways. National roads N-3, N-322, and N-330 have also been affected.
Authorities are advising freight vehicles to take alternative routes: those coming from La Jonquera can use the C-25 towards Lleida/Zaragoza, vehicles from the Barcelona area are directed to use the A-2 towards Lleida/Zaragoza, while those from Tarragona can use the AP-2 towards Lleida/Zaragoza.
