From October 1, 2025, industrial vehicles with Euro V engines (and those of lower classes) will not be allowed to exceed the 40-ton limit. Only trucks with Euro VI engines will be permitted to carry up to 44 tons. A transitional period will be in place until September 30, 2025, allowing transport companies time to comply with the new regulations. During this period, trucks registered after October 1, 2009, and meeting at least the Euro V standard will still be allowed to operate with a total weight exceeding 40 tons.
As of October 1, 2025, any violation of this rule by operating Euro V trucks above the 40-ton limit will result in penalties, which have not yet been specified but are expected to be severe, potentially affecting both companies and drivers. For instance, current fines for breaching traffic restrictions can reach up to €3,750 for companies and €750 for drivers, in addition to potential license points deduction or suspension.
These new measures will apply only to domestic road transport. France increased the total vehicle weight limit to 44 tons in 2013, requiring a fifth axle for articulated trucks exceeding 40 tons (though an earlier proposal for a sixth axle was never implemented). Vehicles over 40 tons must also have air suspension and at least a Euro V engine.
