The GTS Group, an intermodal operator based in Bari, is boosting rail traffic in Campania by increasing services on the Piacenza-Nola route. The connection, which now goes from three to six weekly trips, ensures stronger links with northern Italy in just 24 hours and northern Europe within 48 to 72 hours, covering countries such as the Benelux and the United Kingdom. The number of units moved to and from Campania will rise to 360 per week, totaling 18,000 annually. This will result in a reduction of 180 industrial vehicles on the roads each week.
Export trains will primarily carry food preserves, pasta, olive oil, and packaging materials, while import trains will bring raw materials for food production, machinery, and green technologies such as solar panels. Trains will depart from Piacenza at 3:30 p.m. and arrive in Nola the following morning at 9:00 a.m., with goods available for immediate pickup. Similarly, trains departing from Nola will leave the terminal daily at 1:30 p.m., arriving in Piacenza the next morning at 9:00 a.m.
The increase in services on the Piacenza-Nola route is part of a broader strategy by the GTS Group to enhance the Italian rail network and promote more sustainable logistics solutions. "The intensification of the Piacenza-Nola connection," said Fabio Piliego, Commercial Director of the Group, "adds to the services already activated this year, such as Bari-Verona (January 2024), Bari-Nola (February 2024), and Segrate-Pomezia (March 2024). This will allow us to further support the growth of Campanian businesses. Despite challenges in the rail sector, our commitment remains steadfast: ensuring the continuous movement of goods, while respecting the environment and people."
The strengthening of this railway axis, which will more efficiently connect the north and south of the country, will also have positive impacts for the Nola terminal, as highlighted by Lucio Punzo, CEO of Terminal Intermodale Nola. "The Nola Intermodal Terminal recorded a 3% increase in goods handled in 2023, and the forecasts for the end of 2024 are equally positive. The GTS Group is a crucial partner in our goal to become the leading rail terminal for all of southern Italy."
