At IAA Transportation 2024, the electric and hydrogen-powered commercial vehicle scene was dominated by Chinese manufacturers, with Dongfeng leading the way. The automaker, already known for its rapid global expansion, unveiled several new electric vans aimed at challenging European competitors. Notable models included the new eStarV, a 3-ton light commercial vehicle, and the heavier V9 van.
Dongfeng’s eStarV is a light commercial vehicle designed to meet the needs of a wide range of professionals. Weighing in at 3 tons, this electric van offers two battery options, providing a driving range between 260 and 310 kilometers. Its payload capacity is 1.5 tons, with a cargo volume ranging from 6.6 to 7.2 cubic meters. The vehicle is powered by a 90 kW electric motor, delivering 220 Nm of torque. This motor is fueled by a CATL battery with a capacity of either 42 or 54 kWh. Thanks to fast DC charging, the battery can be recharged from 20% to 80% in just 40 minutes.
Alongside the eStarV, Dongfeng also revealed the V9, a higher-class van with a total weight of 3.5 tons, featuring a design closely resembling the Ari 1710. The mid-range V7 model also attracted attention for its compact dimensions, measuring 1.73 meters wide and 1.98 meters high, offering a cargo volume between 6.6 and 7.3 cubic meters and a payload capacity ranging from 1,525 to 1,560 kilograms. Both the V9 and V7 are equipped with 90 kW electric motors and similar battery options to the eStarV, making them suitable for a variety of tasks, from local to regional deliveries.
In addition to light vehicles, IAA 2024 also saw a strong representation of Chinese heavy-duty trucks, including those powered by traditional internal combustion engines. One standout was Shacman, with a 17-liter diesel engine delivering 840 horsepower, designed for long-haul transportation. However, the real innovation came from the 15-liter liquefied natural gas variant, which boasts 630 horsepower. The diesel-electric hybrid also garnered significant interest, featuring a 560-horsepower diesel engine paired with a 72-horsepower electric motor, offering a solution to reduce emissions without compromising power and efficiency. Chinese manufacturers also showcased electric trucks powered by hydrogen fuel cells, offering a range of up to 1,200 kilometers.
