On July 22, 2024, the European Transport Workers' Federation (ETF) held a day of mobilization in several countries across the continent to protest against the approximately 2,000 job cuts announced by FedEx. In a statement, ETF criticized the company's inability to find organizational solutions that do not disproportionately impact employees. They emphasized the outsourcing of services to countries with lower labor costs, demonstrating that the company's competitive strategy is a race to the bottom, neglecting its current employees.
ETF General Secretary Livia Spera sent a letter to the President of FedEx Express Europe, demanding immediate negotiations and the disclosure of comprehensive information about the planned job cuts, broken down by country and job function. In Italy, on July 22, Filt Cgil, Fit Cisl, and Uiltrasporti called a national strike of FedEx workers, which reportedly involved 90% of the staff. FedEx employs about 2,000 people in Italy, and according to Filt Cgil, the reduction would affect 200 workers. At the European level, ETF organized a demonstration outside the FedEx headquarters in Hoofddorp, Netherlands.
