On 1 January 2025, the Port System Authority of the Eastern Ligurian Sea announced a €57 million funding package for the ports of La Spezia and Marina di Carrara, made possible through contributions from the PNRR as part of the Green Ports programme. Among the key initiatives is the construction of a high-voltage energy infrastructure for La Spezia.
The project, assigned to Terna, will include a power supply station at Stagnoni (Truck Village), capable of delivering up to 110 MW to new port facilities. Designed by Galileo Engineering and valued at €41 million, this project will support developments such as the New Ravano Terminal, the New Gulf Terminal, and the electrification of commercial quays and the new cruise pier at Calata Paita.
Additionally, a technical and economic feasibility study has been approved for a transformation substation and the distribution power lines necessary to electrify the new cruise pier. Prepared by Dba Pro Engineering Studio, this initiative marks another significant step towards adapting port infrastructure to meet contemporary environmental demands, with an estimated cost of €14.6 million.
Another innovative project involves replacing two diesel-powered generators—one servicing the subalvea gallery at La Spezia’s port and the other providing public lighting at Marina di Carrara’s port. These will be substituted with hydrogen-powered systems, implemented by Bluenergy Revolution. With a total cost of €1.86 million, including €1.3 million allocated for construction, this initiative highlights the integration of clean technologies into existing infrastructure.
Extraordinary Commissioner Federica Montaresi commented: “With these latest measures, we conclude a challenging yet pivotal year during which we achieved and initiated some of the most significant works for our ports. For instance, the new seafront promenade in Marina di Carrara and the new cruise pier in La Spezia, integral to the waterfront redevelopment. The word ‘Energy’ has been the guiding thread of our actions, as demonstrated by these recent resolutions to launch major energy efficiency projects in the ports of La Spezia and Marina di Carrara. These efforts align with the needs of future infrastructure developments and the investments by concessionaire operators set to begin in 2025.”
