Contship Italia has announced that La Spezia Container Terminal has completed the consolidation work on the Fornelli Est berth, restoring the terminal to full operational capacity. The work was completed seven days ahead of schedule, allowing full operations to resume from Sunday, 16 March. This intervention is part of a strategic maintenance and development plan aimed at enhancing efficiency and operational capacity at the Spezia port.
The successful completion of the project was made possible through close collaboration between the Eastern Ligurian Sea Port System Authority and LSCT. Their coordinated efforts enabled the swift acquisition of necessary permits and ensured that the work was carried out without disrupting terminal operations. The intervention, commissioned by the port authority, involved filling the cavities beneath the base of the caissons with concrete. To execute the project, steel sheet piles were installed for containment, driven from the quay, and later cut to size by teams of divers working on the seabed.
Beyond safeguarding the existing infrastructure, this operation represents a crucial step for the future of the terminal. The consolidation of the Fornelli Est berth sets the stage for the installation of new, higher-capacity cranes, designed to efficiently handle the latest generation of Ultra Large Container Vessels. This upgrade responds to the growing demand for container traffic and the need to uphold increasingly high operational standards.
