With the launch of the LCCevo project, Lufthansa Cargo unveiled on September 6, 2024, a comprehensive renovation plan for its Frankfurt Cargo Center, aiming to transform it into the most modern air freight hub in Europe. The facility, in continuous operation since 1982, spans 330,000 square meters and handles loading and unloading operations 24/7. The revamp will include upgrades to cargo handling facilities, storage and transport technologies, IT systems, and administrative buildings.
One of the most innovative aspects of the project is its focus on sustainability and operational efficiency. In addition to new infrastructure, including a 42-meter-high automated warehouse—the second tallest building at Frankfurt Airport—the entire restructuring process will take place without disrupting daily operations. This approach, described by project leader Stefan Dürr as "open-heart surgery," requires close coordination with partner companies such as Züblin and Bleichert Automation to ensure smooth operations throughout the renovation process.
