Starting from the summer 2025 season, Lufthansa Group is taking a further step in the progressive integration of Ita Airways into its operational ecosystem. From this year, all flights operated by the Italian airline at Frankfurt and Munich airports have been transferred to terminals managed by the Group, bringing together all its carriers under one roof at the main European hubs.
This organisational decision represents not only a logistical evolution but a true step change in the management of passenger flows, significantly reducing transfer times, shortening walking distances between gates, and easing access to high-speed rail connections. In the long term, the project is part of a broader vision aimed at enhancing the network and boosting the value of the Italian market, where demand remains strong.
At Frankfurt Airport – the heart of Lufthansa operations – Ita Airways has moved from Terminal 2 to Terminal 1, where all its flights now depart, using gates A and B. This shift reduces walking distances and improves access to the Deutsche Bahn long-distance rail station, a key hub for high-speed ICE train connections. At Munich Airport too, Ita Airways has left Terminal 1 to relocate to the prestigious Terminal 2 and its satellite building, both recognised with a five-star rating by Skytrax for their service quality.
This integration mirrors similar steps already taken at other European hubs where Lufthansa Group airlines operate, such as Brussels, Rome, Vienna and Zurich. In Zurich, for example, a seamless transfer experience between Swiss and Ita Airways has long been established, the result of well-coordinated operational harmonisation. In recent months, the check-in counters of the two airlines have also been positioned side by side at most jointly served airports, helping to create a more cohesive and user-friendly environment for connecting passengers.
Alongside terminal integration, Ita Airways and Lufthansa Group carriers have also launched codeshare flights, now available for booking within the summer 2025 schedule. This commercial cooperation allows travellers to combine routes operated by both airlines into a single booking, offering more than one hundred new connections across Europe. Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines and Air Dolomiti are thus interlinking their networks with that of Ita Airways.
Among the newly accessible destinations for Group customers are several otherwise hard-to-reach Italian cities such as Alghero, Lampedusa, Pantelleria and Reggio Calabria. Also notable is the opportunity to fly to Tripoli in Libya through the codeshare arrangements. Completing the picture of integration is the reciprocal access to lounges.
