On September 4, 2024, APM Terminals marked the launch of a major $115 million upgrade at its West Africa Container Terminal in the Port of Onne, Nigeria. The enhancements include the expansion of the container yard, acquisition of new equipment, and the construction of an office complex. The company has introduced new mobile cranes and cargo handling equipment that will significantly reduce container turnaround times. The project also features an automated access system and a new data center.
The yard expansion, which has nearly doubled in size, not only provides additional space but also improves safety standards through optimized container stacking, reducing the risk of collisions. Security is further enhanced with access control systems and video surveillance. The terminal now boasts a 1 MW solar power generation facility.
During the inauguration, Olaf Gelhausen, Chief Operating Officer of APM Terminals, stated: "This $115 million investment is a testament to our confidence in Nigeria's economic potential. As Africa’s largest economy and most populous nation, Nigeria is experiencing remarkable growth."
In Nigeria, APM Terminals also operates a container terminal in Lagos, and its two facilities handle approximately half of the country’s container traffic. The company is in discussions with the Nigerian government about additional investments, with potential funding reaching up to $500 million.
