Mercedes-Benz Trucks is changing the game with the cabin of its diesel model, the Actros L, which, from December 2024, will be equipped with the ProCabin, previously exclusive to electric models. The cabin’s new aerodynamic line, aided by an 80-millimeter longer front end, is anticipated to offer fuel savings of up to three percent, as stated by the German manufacturer. This extension, although seemingly minimal, plays a significant role in enhancing the airflow around the vehicle, making it smoother and reducing turbulence.
The new design also incorporates a pre-spoiler on the roof, positioned in front of the main spoiler. This feature is designed to prepare the airflow to interact more effectively with the rear spoiler, improving the aerodynamics at the back of the vehicle. The spoilers are engineered to diminish the air vortex that forms behind the truck, a phenomenon that can significantly increase aerodynamic drag.
Deflector panels around the side windows and the cabin's front pillars have been redesigned to minimize turbulence at the sides of the vehicle. These deflectors steer the air around the cabin more effectively, reducing lateral resistance and enhancing vehicle stability at high speeds. The cab's large flat front and the bumper, with minimal air inlet openings, contribute to minimizing frontal turbulence. The bumper's design reduces air entering the engine compartment, which can cause resistance, and directs airflow more smoothly around the vehicle.
A key feature of the ProCabin is the use of various seals to isolate the engine compartment from external airflow. By reducing the openings through which air can enter, internal resistance is decreased, contributing to a cleaner overall airflow around the vehicle. The underbody has also been redesigned with new paneling that reduces aerodynamic resistance by directing air underneath the truck with less turbulence. The side deflectors, designed like sails, improve airflow between the tractor and the semitrailer. This is crucial for large vehicles, where airflow between the cabin and trailer can create significant turbulence and aerodynamic drag.
The ProCabin also enhances cabin livability. It will be available in three variants: Stream, Big, and Giga Space, offering different interior sizes and fittings. The Stream is designed to optimize space and aerodynamics, ideal for long-haul transportation where diesel consumption reduction is a priority. The Big offers more interior space than the Stream, making it suitable for operations requiring longer periods spent in the cabin. Lastly, the Giga Space is the flagship variant, providing the maximum space and comfort available, including luxury details and finishes, for drivers who spend many consecutive days on the road.
The ProCabin features seats with improved heating and flat-woven fabric seat covers. Its variants include beds with complete slatted frames and a new thick mattress. All lighting, both inside and outside, uses LEDs to enhance visibility and visual comfort. This includes the main headlights, position lights, side and rear lights, with the option of Matrix LED headlights for maximum luminous performance. The interior boasts ambient lighting and additional LED gooseneck reading lamps.
From April 2025, Mercedes-Benz Trucks will make available the Multimedia Cockpit Interactive 2, a dashboard offering a new menu layout, voice control, improved connectivity, and new applications such as Connected Traffic Warnings. The ProCabin's cockpit also includes various USB-C ports on the sidewalls, two-tone curtains, a second refrigerator, a 220-volt power outlet, and the SoloStar Concept, now available in two new seat cover variants. The Actros L is powered by the 12.8-liter OM471 diesel engine and features various electronic safety systems, such as Active Brake Assist 6 and Active Sideguard Assist 2.
